I thought it would be useful to talk through your fish and chip options in Robin Hood's Bay.  Take away fish and chips is often a first night choice when you arrive somewhere.   It is quick and easy.


As I write this there is currently only one choice for take away fish and chips in Robin Hood's Bay and that is the Fish Box at the top of the hill.  It might currently be the only choice but it is a great choice and you can eat in overlooking the sea or take out.

Eat In Fish & Chips 

Fancy eating in for fish and chips, well there is plenty of choice in Robin Hood's Bay:


Bramble Bistro - Served all day, gluten free as standard, booking recommended in the evening. 


The Bay Hotel - Served all day, gluten free available, sea views. Take away possible in low season.


The Victoria Hotel -  Served all day, gluten free available.  Dine in the restaurant or the pub.


The Grosvenor Hotel -  Served all day

Whitby Fish & Chips 

If you are heading to Whitby for the day, then you will be spoilt for choice of where to go for fish and chips.  Here are a list of some popular choices.


Trenchers frequently ranks as the top fish and chips in Whitby, winning the "Welcome to Whitby" 2025 favorite award. The Magpie Café and Royal Fisheries often come a close second.


For a long time the best fish and chips in Whitby was widely considered to be found at The Magpie Café, which often sees long queue outside even before it opens.


Trenchers is renowned for large portions and high quality, whilst the Royal Fisheries is the place to go for traditional beef dripping.


Other top contenders include Quayside, Mr Chips and Hadley's Fish Restaurant. 

Haddock or Cod?

Finally you have chosen you fish and chip shop the next decision is haddock or cod then garden peas or mushy peas?


Listening to the radio the other day there was a big thumbs up for Haddock.  


Cod does tends to have a firmer chunkier flake and a milder taste. Whereas haddock tends to be more tender, sweeter and a little smaller.
